What is a prosthodontist?

- Prosthodontics is one of 12 dental specialties recognized by the American Dental Association. Prosthodontists undergo extensive training in the diagnosis, treatment, and maintenance of complex oral and facial issues. These conditions can arise as a result of tooth decay, tooth wear, gum disease, trauma, congenital scenarios, or through treatment of oral cancer or benign tumors. Prosthodontic treatment can range from a single tooth to a complete oral rehabilitation.
- Prosthodontics is the only restorative dental specialty dedicated to aesthetics, dental implant restoration, and removable procedures. It also includes training in the treatment of maxillofacial conditions. Note that less than 2% of all dentists are trained Prosthodontists. This involves years of formal post-graduate dental education and training. You can learn more about prosthodontists, what we do, and how we are trained, from the American Dental Association, or the American College of Prosthodontists.
